Life For Rent

As many of you know, WhyNot has been closed for quite a while now. Sitting by the side along Tras Street, one wouldn’t even notice its existence during the day. Come night time, many will remember sitting along the elevated ground opposite the club itself, to catch up with friends, to down some alcohol (7-11 alcohol is cheaper!), or to simply party OUTSIDE the club itself. Regardless of how one did it, most will agree it was a home club to many. Where many regulars know one another. The staff are great, and the music always familiar to the ears. Over time, many club hits came and went. Some however, remained as favorites and were part of the WhyNot anthems that everyone knew and loved.

The club may have come and gone but it still has a special place in my heart. It was around 3 years back around this time when I first stepped into WhyNot. Perhaps it was just some other club that ‘pissed me off with their service standards’ or maybe it was destiny, that led me into WhyNot (to look for a friend) and that was when it all began. The weekend nights spent there took me away from all the stress from work and school and despite a tiring week, I remember leaving the club a happier person. I brought ’str8′ friends to join in the fun and we had great nights partying together. In fact, it was probably so fun one of them turned gay eventually (hee hee!). We lived by many of our ground rules, one of which is “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” and I think it worked really well cause we had all kinds of things happening and I can assure you, you wouldn’t have believed it until you’ve seen it for yourself.

The drag shows, the Chivas, and Deborah Cox blasting over the speakers were just some of the familiar sights and sounds that I looked forward to each weekend. Towards the end of it all, it was where I found the love of my life. Someone who treasures me more than I can ask for. Someone whom I would eventually choose to settle down with. While this phase in my life has come and gone it has not been forgotten. At least, not to me.

This year, I have put together a 5 hour non-stop dance compilation mixed by yours truly, featuring some of WhyNot’s signature tunes the way I remember them. It’s not perfect but it signifies how we have all learnt to move on with our lives yet remembering the sounds reminiscent of the club we grew fondly of, Club WhyNot. I commemorate this personal anniversary by sharing the dance mix with all of you, broken into 3 parts for easy downloading (Click on the Part 1/2/3 link accordingly).
